PM Balen’s axe falls: Asset investigation commission targets high-flying frauds
Those corrupt individuals who used to enter Singha Durbar
wearing slippers and then within a year or two build mansions in Kathmandu and
zoom around in shiny cars have now begun their countdown. The files of each and
every one of them are about to be opened.
To expose the horoscopes of their ill-gotten wealth, the
Balen government has formed a powerful commission. The PM Balen government has
taken a firm stand against corrupt and bribe-taking leaders and employees who,
like leeches, have fattened themselves by looting the state treasury built from
the sweat of the people.
It has been confirmed that the files of those who have
hidden millions and billions earned through corruption will now be opened. The
government led by Balen has already formed an asset investigation committee to
open the files of the corrupt. Following its commitment, the government led by
Prime Minister Balen Shah has formed a five-member asset investigation
committee.
With the assets of those who have amassed illicit wealth set
to be investigated, it is certain that crying and fleeing have already begun.
The corrupt are likely feeling anxious about where to hide their immense wealth
earned through corruption—whether to wash it away in rivers, bury it in pits,
or burn it in fire like during the Gen Z movement. Sweat has begun to drip from
the teeth of the corrupt. With asset investigation imminent, where will they
hide now? Has trouble arrived? Definitely, yes.
It is now certain that the law will turn the tables on those
who show off their status in society through corruption. Because, since the
republic, the assets of everyone sitting in government and public positions,
from top to bottom, have been scrutinized in detail. After investigation, their
assets will be confiscated, and the corrupt will be locked in cages.
A commission has been formed to investigate the assets of
all those who have held power and high government positions since 2006. The
cabinet meeting held decided to form an Asset Investigation and Inspection
Commission to collect, verify, and investigate the asset details of high-ranking
officials and senior civil servants who have held public office since the
political change of 2006-2007.
The commission will consist of former Supreme Court Justice
Rajendra Kumar Bhandari as coordinator, former justices Purushottam Parajuli
and Chandiraj Dhakal, former Deputy Inspector General of Police Ganesh KC, and
Chartered Accountant Prakash Lamsal as members.
Investigating the assets of the corrupt was one of the major
demands of the Gen Z movement. In line with that demand, the government has
decided to form a commission to investigate assets. While the formation of the
commission is positive in itself, impartial investigation is necessary. The
commission should not become merely a political weapon to target rivals. If the
investigation is not impartial, even the government's own commission could face
questions.
Investigation against Former Minister Deepak Khadka
The government has started opening the files of allegations
against former Energy Minister Deepak Khadka. The Balen government has
initiated strict action against Khadka. It has been reported that an
investigation has been launched against Khadka for corruption and tax evasion.
The Department of Money Laundering has sent a letter to the Commission for the
Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) to investigate corruption and to
the Revenue Investigation Department to investigate suspected tax evasion.
Khadka was arrested by the Central Investigation Bureau
(CIB) of Nepal Police on March 15 from Gulerikant. Although initially arrested
for money laundering, he has now been handed over to the Revenue Investigation
Department on charges of tax evasion. The department is conducting
investigations after obtaining a three-day extension from Lalitpur District
Court.
He was the Minister for Energy, Water Resources, and
Irrigation during the Genji movement. Before that, he was the Minister of State
for Water Supply and Sanitation. He was elected twice to the House of
Representatives from Sankhuwasabha. While in public office, his asset declarations,
bank accounts and banking transactions for personal and business purposes, tax
returns, share ownership in various companies, and other matters were found
suspicious during investigation, leading to further investigation.
Since the details submitted while in public office did not
match his actual assets, an investigation has been launched against Khadka on
suspicion of corruption and tax evasion. Khadka has real estate dealings,
investments in hotels, and various hydropower companies. He is involved in real
estate transactions through Khadka Land Development Pvt. Ltd., as well as
various industries and businesses. He was also embroiled in controversy over
not paying rent for Scout's land.
It is said that Khadka owns houses and land in various
places in Budhanilkantha, Chandragiri, and Sankhuwasabha. During the Genji
movement, his house in Budhanilkantha was set on fire, and cash was also
burned. Demands had been raised to investigate the source of his wealth, citing
the large amount of cash burned in his house. Khadka had become a minister
because of his closeness to Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba.
