Image
MIRACLE INSTITUTE Climbing the ladder of success By LB Thapa At a time when Nepali education has come to a crossroads, more and more students and their parents look worried about the future of their wards. They want to ensure academic and professional success for their children. When the country’s economy has been taking a nosedive, many youths have lost their hopes at home and started finding greener pastures abroad. Under such circumstances, many education consultancies have come into existence across the country. These education consultancies are important as liaison agents between foreign academic institutions and students.  Over the years, several educational consultancies have been established in Pokhara as well. But among them, Miracle Institute has come out shining for its outstanding services. Gaining popularity is one thing, but winning the trust of parents and students adds aesthetic value to an institution. And this value helps the institution stay floating...

Since then until now, Pokhara has been the home of the Shakya family. “My relatives were not in favor of my father’s decision to migrate to Pokhara when the Shakya clan was already doing very well in the heartland of Kathmandu. However, my father was much more prudent than my uncles were. More like a seer, he had already anticipated a crowded Kathmandu in the future that would make life much more difficult and challenging for people,” said Shakya. The late Purna Man Shakya, father of Jitendra Man Shakya, was not confused about what to do in Pokhara because he had already established a bicycle shop in the heart of Kathmandu. “My father had an established bicycle shop in Kathmandu. Photo credit: womennepal.org; bianet.org; spotlight Nepal   By LB THAPA The practice of Chhaupadi tradition is rampant in many rural areas of the country. Nepal’s Supreme Court banned Chhaupadi tradition in 2005, describing it as a human rights violation. However, the government has completely failed to stop this tradition in many rural parts of the country.  Forcing a woman to practice Chhaupadi is a crime. The guilty can receive a three-month jail sentence or a 3,000 rupee fine or both. Although Nepal has made so much progress in the last two decades or so, some traditions like Chhaupadi are still rampant in some parts of the country. According to research conducted by a non-government organization, about 67 percent of women from Dailekh and Surkhet districts in Karnali province are found to strictly follow Chhaupadi tradition. The other da...

SHOULD ARTISTS BE GIVEN FULL FREEDOM TO EXPRESS THEIR CREATIVITY?

Image
Artists are the most creative people in our society. Should there be any restriction upon them or not? This is the subject of discussion. Photo: LB Thapa  Even artists cannot be left unbridled. A healthy limitation is a must. Proper monitoring of creative artists is equally important. Every artist’s creation must be monitored whether it is appropriate or not.   By SHARADA KUNWAR Without an iota of doubt, artists should be given complete freedom to express their ideas. However, this does not mean that there should not be a limit. Of course, inappropriate materials must not be served. There must be a clear demarcation line between creativity and vulgarity.  Artists are respected all over the world for their creativity. Artists like poets, singers, painters, and so on are the nation's assets. People as a whole appreciate the creativity of the artists with both hands. Unconditional love and appreciation of the people give emotional and psychological impetus to artists....

Image
Old mother has no home to go. Photo: Read 2b Happy.   Kanchhi’s parents were extremely angry, but they suppressed their anger and decided to give one chance to Kanchhi to mend her ways. Kanchhi was warned for not meeting the boy forever. Kanchhi nodded in affirmation only to keep her parents in darkness. Kanchhi was meeting Ramesh regularly. BY ISMITA RANA  Actually, the color of her skin was white but it had turned black due to dust and dirt. She seems to be perplexed and bore no emotions on her face. Her teeth had turned yellowish and her hair shabby. Long and dirty nails made no difference to her; she is busy foraging some eatable foods in the garbage.   Some benevolent people feel pity for her and give her foods and clothes that she would accept with awkward giggling. She was not aware of her situation, as she felt neither sad nor happy---she was indifferent to her emotions. When asked her name, she would always grin, barring all her stained teeth. The only word she...
