A grand plot against Sudan Gurung’s resignation
By LB Thapa
As Home Minister, Sudan Gurung took an aggressive stand against corrupt individuals, brokers, and middlemen. Young, energetic, and bold, his swift actions against corruption left wrongdoers restless and fearful.
Sudan Gurung also initiated a thorough judicial inquiry into some of the country’s most prominent business houses—the very same entities that had previously caused significant trouble for former Home Minister Rabi Lamichhane. These business tycoons soon turned their attention to Sudan Gurung. His rapid progress made them fear arrest and the potential collapse of their business empires, like a house of cards.
It became imperative to halt Sudan Gurung’s further actions against these powerful business houses. However, bribery and intimidation proved futile against a man as fearless as Sudan Gurung. The only remaining option was to create a public uproar over his purchase of shares worth 500,000 rupees (25,000 each) in Star Micro Insurance Company Ltd. and Liberty Micro Insurance—companies backed by Deepak Bhatta and the Shankar Group.
Purchasing shares in any company is not a crime. People from all walks of life invest in shares. In a formal statement, Sudan Gurung had already provided the necessary documents to prove how he arranged the funds to buy those shares, including the source of the money. Everything was transparent and above board.
But the threatened business groups were merely waiting for an opportunity to strike. When that opportunity arose, they seized it without hesitation. Using paid media outlets, they manufactured a massive outcry and demanded Sudan Gurung’s resignation. This was nothing more than an old tactic to demoralize and destabilize the government. Unfortunately, the Balen government failed to see through this strategy and fell victim to their grand design.
It is worth noting that some questionable businessmen had previously attempted to influence the finance minister. Although they did not succeed at that time, they have now been brought under investigation.
It should also be remembered that no minister from any previous government ever resigned over such a trivial matter. Even when neck-deep in corruption, they clung to their positions. In contrast, Home Minister Sudan Gurung proactively resigned to facilitate the investigation process. This demonstrates that he has no greed for power and that he is a man of both word and action.
Let us not forget: Sudan Gurung remains fully committed to taking severe action against all corrupt people in the country. His campaign to arrest the corrupt will never stop. One must understand that Sudan Gurung stepped down from the post of Home Minister solely to ensure a free and fair investigation. This is not his departure—he will make a grandiose comeback.
Crores
of Nepali people, impressed by Sudan Gurung’s bold actions against corruption,
stand firmly with him. They are certain that once the investigation is
complete, Sudan Gurung will reclaim his position as Home Minister and resume
hunting down corrupt individuals, no matter where they hide. Then, the corrupt
will find no safe place—of that, we can be sure.
