PARKING ATTENDANT BEATS TWO WOMEN AT MAHENDRAPOOL, POKHARA

PARKING ATTENDANT BEATS TWO WOMEN AT MAHENDRAPOOL
Many local commuters complain about the misbehavior of parking attendants

By LB Thapa

Local commuters have long complained about the misbehavior of parking attendants. Often behaving more like bullies than public servants, these attendants frequently resort to aggression when collecting parking fees. If commuters are unable to pay—sometimes simply because they have forgotten their wallets—they are met with hostility rather than understanding. Regardless of the situation, attendants often refuse to let anyone leave without paying, leading to frequent confrontations.

Widespread complaints of rude behavior

Many commuters have reported incidents of rude and aggressive behavior by parking attendants. Numerous individuals have fallen victim to such conduct. It is worth noting that most parking attendants—both men and women—are deaf and mute, which makes communication with them challenging for those who do not know sign language.

A common issue reported by commuters is the aggressive attitude of these attendants. They rarely show flexibility, even when someone genuinely forgets their wallet and offers to pay later. Because many are unable to hear or speak, they often do not understand such explanations. Their response is frequently physical, and they do not hesitate to confront anyone—including women—who attempts to leave without paying.

Incident at Mahendrapool bazaar

In a recent incident at Mahendrapool Bazaar, a parking attendant allegedly assaulted two women over a dispute involving ten rupees. According to eyewitnesses, the women did not have change and were in a hurry. They promised to return and pay the fee later. However, the attendant, being deaf and mute, did not understand what they were saying. When the women tried to leave on their scooter, the attendant grabbed one by the neck and the other by the hair, dragging them in public.

Demand for better training and hiring practices

There is growing concern that parking attendants should be trained in proper conduct and communication. Many commuters find it extremely difficult to interact with deaf and mute attendants, especially in stressful or time-sensitive situations. It has been suggested that hiring individuals with whom commuters can communicate more easily would help prevent such incidents.

Authorities urged to take action

Past incidents have also led to physical altercations between commuters and parking attendants. It is essential that the relevant authorities take this matter seriously and act before a more serious incident occurs.
