An appeal to PM Sushila Karki: Do not tarnish your hard-earned reputation for a moment of Greed
An appeal to PM Sushila Karki:
Do not tarnish your hard-earned reputation for a moment of Greed
By LB Thapa
Let us not forget that Gen Z made immense sacrifices, shedding their blood in the fight against favoritism and nepotism. Yet, what Prime Minister Sushila Karki has recently done stands as a glaring example of the very nepotism they opposed.
This is truly deeply unfortunate. Many young people across the country lost their lives in the struggle against corruption and nepotism. Their efforts were not in vain—corrupt politicians were removed from power. It was with immense trust that Gen Z appointed Sushila Karki as Prime Minister, tasking her with conducting free and fair elections in the country.
PM Karki received widespread acclaim for successfully holding elections on schedule. The people of Nepal are deeply indebted to her for delivering on that promise. Now, with only a few days left before she steps down from the office of Prime Minister, her legacy faces an unexpected threat.
Just when everything seemed to be going well, PM Karki made a decision that has drawn sharp, widespread condemnation. Every sensible person in the country has denounced her act as an open display of nepotism.
PM Sushila Karki appointed her Chief Personal Secretary, Adarsha Kumar Shrestha, as Chairman of the National Trust for Nature Conservation (NTNC). Mr. Shrestha does not meet the qualifications required to lead such an institution. Yet, it was solely through PM Karki's blessing that he assumed this position.
The public is shocked to witness such a blatant move. PM Karki appears to have disregarded all concerns and directly appointed Mr. Shrestha to the post. At a time when the nation has grown weary of corrupt politicians, PM Karki has, ironically, followed the same path. By this act, she has revealed a side of her character that suggests she is no different from the corrupt political leaders the people have rejected.
Frontline Gen Z activists have stepped forward to criticize PM Karki's misstep and have urged her to correct it. If she does not, they warn, the youth of this country may be forced to take to the streets in protest. Former Education Minister Mahabir Pun has also declared the appointment to be unequivocally wrong.
Across the country, many are now openly criticizing what they see as PM Karki's greed. They argue that she has repeated the very mistakes that led to the downfall of older political parties. Now, it seems, PM Karki has chosen to walk the same rotten path.
PM Karki must not forget that the youth of this country did not sacrifice their lives so that high-ranking posts could be handed out as farewell gifts to her cronies.
The frustrated people of Nepal gave a resounding mandate to the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) for one primary reason: to end corruption, favoritism, and nepotism.
PM Karki cannot be allowed to gift a position of responsibility to someone simply because he served as her personal secretary. The people have fought long and hard against the corrupt elements within parties like UML and Nepali Congress. Enough is enough. The youth of this country will not remain silent or blind to injustice. PM Karki must correct her mistake before it is too late.
It is especially disheartening to recall that PM Karki has previously been accused of favoring her personal secretary, Adarsha Kumar Shrestha, and his wife, Sangeeta Shrestha. Public outcry at the time forced her to reverse those decisions. Sadly, it appears she has learned little from those past mistakes.
As the saying goes, old habits die hard. With her recent
actions, PM Karki has proven that she is, after all, no different from the
corrupt leaders the people have fought to remove.
