THE NEPAL POLICE
Dedication, Service, and Responsibility
By Chhabi Subedi ‘Bijayee’

Our dedicated teachers always work hard to impart a better education to our students. So that they can become aware of their responsibilities toward their motherland and society. In general, parents are always worried about their children's future. Most parents spend most of their time thinking about how they can make their children’s future safe and secure.

According to a Sanskrit verse, students should be as clever as a crow, concentrate like a crane, sleep less like dogs, eat less, and go away from homes for higher education. These words stand true for all students in the world.

Ever since I came to my senses, I understood that a nation can become stronger and more developed if our students are well educated. If students are well educated, only then will they be able to render their services to society in different capacities.

The government departments have administrative power, and they should be responsible for the country and the people. Among many departments, let me write a few words about peace and security that belong to the Nepal Police. In the 21st century, those countries that have fortified their security and maintained peace and harmony in their countries are invincible. If peace and security have been maintained strongly, many other departments will automatically get a boost.

The police force of the country should always maintain close proximity to the public. It is their responsibility to maintain peace and harmony in the country. The country has the police and the army to support each other in times of crisis. In the present opinion article, I would like to write a few words about the Nepal Police.

The first thing is that unlike students who eat less and study hard, police personnel cannot work hard while eating less. They need enough nutritious food; only then will they be able to work hard and be able to defend the country from the anti-social elements. Our police personnel are hardworking, and they have proved their worth on many occasions. They go wherever they have been posted, and they work there with a sense of responsibility. Whether it is raining, chilly weather, or scorching sunlight, our police personnel make no complaint and perform their duties.

Our police are equipped with many characteristics. They are dutiful, selfless, brave, loyal, disciplined, and always ready to serve the nation. These qualities actually make the Nepal Police one of the best police forces in the world.

According to the World Justice Project’s (WJP Rule of Law Index 2014), the Nepal Police ranks 2nd among 6 South Asian countries in overall rule of law performance. I hope Nepal Police will be able to maintain its position, and in the future, I want to see Nepal Police standing number one on this list. And I am sure the Nepal police have the willpower to make it happen.

Yours truly still remembers that heartbreaking moment when the country was jolted by a severe earthquake in 2015, resulting in the deaths of many people and the loss of public property beyond imagination. During that difficult moment, our police and soldiers worked together and rescued many people. They provided food, shelter, and medicines to needy people. Whenever the country faced any misfortune, police and army personnel came forward and served as saviors.

The way police are working in the country, I can express it mathematically. The combination of people and police = a peaceful society. Similarly, police + people = a civilized and developed nation. Peace loving Nepal Police have been stationed in many countries where security is weak and the streets are ruled by rioters and terrorists. In such risky circumstances, Nepal Police personnel work and perform their duties. The Nepal Police have earned a huge name and goodwill for their committed work to maintain peace in those countries. This act by the Nepal Police must be appreciated.

When I appreciate the Nepal Police, this does not mean that I am a blind supporter of the Nepal Police. This is not true at all. Everywhere we go, we find some good people and some bad people. There are some bad people as well in the Nepal Police. It is the responsibility of the concerned authorities to identify such people and throw them out. In order to strengthen the Nepal Police, such harsh steps must be taken by the government.

Police and people must live together, believing in each other. People’s trust in police establishes a bond of love and respect between police and people. The police are the savior. It is their duty to protect the citizens of this country.

However, on many occasions, it has been observed that an agitated crowd pelt stones over the police force and inflicted severe injuries on them. People should not take the law into their own hands. It is not only illegal but also illogical and immoral.

However, during protests, police also open fire and kill innocent people on the street. Such a police act cannot be justified at all. Those responsible politicians and higher authorities who give orders to shoot peaceful protestors are more responsible for the death of life than Nepal Police personnel are. They have only executed the order given to them.

The Nepal Police is an independent organization. It must protect the people and their property in every situation. No political party or a bunch of influential people can use or misuse the Nepal Police for their own vested interests.
